Livia Albeck-Ripka has a long surname. She says writing it over and over again as a child probably helped her literacy skills, but it didn’t improve her handwriting. Livia studied philosophy and creative writing, worked as a journalist and had many extraordinary conversations in her current role as the deputy editor at Dumbo Feather. She’s a bit of an all rounder with a passion for humans, the wild, and making sense of the world with those odd little things we call sentences.
Livia is taking Fred the camera to India and the Andaman Islands with her boyfriend Daniel for work, adventure and freedom! They will be meeting some extraordinary people like Bunker Roy from the Barefoot College – who teaches grandmothers, yep, grandmothers, to become solar engineers! They will also be doing yoga on the rooftops in Rishikesh, meeting monkeys in Pushkar, smashing coconuts in the Andaman Islands and learning about seed-saving with the legendary environmental activist Vandana Shiva.
One of Livia’s favourite family photos is of her great-grandmother, Bub, at over 90-years-old, holding her as a baby. She died when Livia was little, but her family talks about Bub as gentle, kind and beautiful.
