Alice Fleming is a Melbourne-born stage and event manager who works in theatre and dance. She regularly travels with Back to Back Theatre, a Geelong based company that works with actors with intellectual disabilities. Last year the company toured to America, Canada, Asia & Europe. She is midway through her Executive Master of Arts degree at Melbourne University.
Regularly taking her instant camera on her travels, she loves the instant gratification and the imperfectly unique image it provides. Alice is a big believer in the kindness of strangers and has regularly been at the mercy of strangers whiles travelling; often creating unexpected connections and great friendships in the most unusual of locations.
“I am always interested in breaking down barriers and really meeting the community that I enter, whether it is through couch surfing, or making new friends in unknown places.” -Alice
Alice will be travelling to Iran and the Middle East in March as she has always been interested in these travel destinations. The incredible cultural differences, amazing food and generous people that Iran has are all reasons that Alice wants to see it for herself. The general responses people will have from seeing an instant camera and film is unknown and hopefully it will be met with excitement. Alice regularly uses her photos as gifts for people she meets along the way and she finds it incredible how easy it is to break down barriers with the gesture of something as simple a photograph.
Alice’s favourite photo is a really hard one to pick but she is particularly fond of this one at the moment. Her brother found it at her grandmother’s house recently. She doesn’t have many photos of them together when she was this small so it was a really cute surprise for Alice.
“There is such a monumental age gap between us it’s nice to know that we spent some time together growing up as I don’t have many memories of it.” -Alice
