In 2012 Lizzie went on a mission trip to Thailand with her church and visited the founders and staff of the non-for-profit school, Help Save The Kids (HSTK). HSTK is situated along the border of Thailand and Burma in a small town called Mae Sot. The school children are educated in sustainable farming, which equips them with the skills to create an income for their families and their communities. Every week the kids at the school walk through the community together, give away rice and pray for families they meet. Lizzie is returning to Mae Sot with Rosella the camera as a volunteer teacher for the month of February, working with the team to establish a culturally sensitive curriculum for staff and future volunteers. She will use this opportunity to take photographs of people in and around the community where she will be living.
Lizzie is looking forward to being immersed in the community and culture of Mae Sot, living near the school. She wants to take and give photos to the people of the community to give them a lasting impression of their time together. She hopes this unique experience will improve her teaching, as she will get to know the community better and she will be able to find the meaning behind the photos.
Lizzie’s favourite picture was taken when all her family were together, a couple of days after her second niece was born. The photo captures an incredible moment, funny faces, big laughs, and cheesy smiles. It is her family at their best!
